Struggles of Every Leader

Leadership is synonymous with strength, power, vision, inspiration and all other idealistic adjectives. This however, has now revolutionized  and has risen above the archaic definition of how a leader is expected to be. It has become dynamic and ever-evolving, especially with the blooming start-up and entrepreneurship culture.

There are a number of things a leader struggles with after attaining that position. A few of them being-

  1. Fighting Cynicism for Real Relationships- This is a general trend that the position of power has the potential to alter anyone’s thought process. Leaders find becoming suspicious of others motives easily. They are likely to be targeted by opportunists who use kind words and put up the act of selflessness not for altruistic reasons but to satisfy their ulterior motives.
  2. Embracing Dissent- Position of power tends to make you a bad listener. More powerful a person feels, less likely they are to seek out for advice, help or even listen to what the fellow people have to say in a disagreement. It is natural and comforting to surround yourself with cheerleaders and yes-sayers. This however takes a toll when you are stuck in the echo-chamber of people who start clouding your opinion.
  3. Balancing Confidence and Collaboration- Given that confidence is one of the major attributes of a successful leader, there is always scope for more. Confidence gives you the edge but you need collaboration from your team and fellows for executing plans. Confidence enables and disables both. The enabling power pushes you to take risks but simultaneously disables you to seek collaboration. It also leads to the inability to take criticism constructively.
  4. Compassionate Accountability- If one is just compassionate without being accountable about things given the position they hold, it leads you nowhere. One cannot just be extremely nice and win accolades. You need to be held accountable for the team. The reverse is also true, accountability without compassion leads you nowhere. You cannot just lead and go about every situation with a rock solid head. The idea is always to strike the right balance between the two aspects.

Becoming a leader is still easy but maintaining the position takes a lot of efforts and dynamic personal development. It is imperative to learn at every step from one or the other. Practice open mindedness and humility while requesting advice and working coercively as a team.
